LET’S TALK ABOUT THE JOB!
You report to the Senior Accounting Manager and will service Shurgard’s operations and development business in your market(s) with accounting and other administrative services. You will be responsible for maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with IFRS.
These accounting activities include mainly organizing the group’s Purchase-to-Pay process, the Support Centers closing activities, organizing the intercompany recharge process activities, but also some more general duties such as general ledger preparation, financial reporting, year-end audit preparation and the support of budget and forecast activities.

Additionally, you will play a critical role in other significant projects, including a financial system transformation, as well as assisting with acquisitions, budget and forecast activities, accounting policies and standard updates, and training initiatives.

You are also the contact person for the legal entities in Belgium and France ensuring all local regulatory requirements are met.

In this high-visibility role, you will coordinate in a fast-paced environment the flow of information from multiple departments (i.e. FP&A, Tax, Legal, IS, Human Resources, Marketing...) within the central Support Center. In this role you will show both a willingness to engage in daily financial recording and an ability to strategically evolve Shurgard’s financial management to ever increasing levels of efficiency and effectiveness.
You will also have contact with local management (Market Managers, District Managers, Facility Management etc.)

You supervise (junior/senior) Accountants/Experts and are responsible for managing the team to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner.

LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES!
About your Accounting and Finance responsibilities:

  • You manage all aspects of accounting and financial reporting of the subsidiaries in your area of expertise in accordance with IFRS and local GAAP in order to meet local statutory and group reporting requirements.
  • You manage partnerships with external service providers (Accounting Firms, Payment Service Providers, ERP Software Providers).
  • You manage the group’s Purchase-to-Pay process.
  • You manage the group’s disbursement banking and treasury activities.
  • You manage the group’s inventory accounting.
  • You ensure Intercompany financial processes.
  • You ensure accurate tracking of expenses for the European Support Center. You ensure SLAs towards internal stakeholders are met.
  • You ensure the review of reconciliation files.
  • You ensure delivery of management reporting.
  • You ensure the preparations of budgets
  • You ensure the preparations of annual (local statutory) accounts (Belgium and French entities).
  • You ensure the delivery of qualitative data for the ESG program.

  • You ensure proper documentation of unusual/significant transactions (Accounting memos).
  • You ensure that all tax declarations and tax compliance activities are met in close collaboration with the Tax department.
  • You support the execution of mergers, acquisitions and integration as necessary.
  • You support internal and external audit processes.

About your process and systems responsibilities:

  • You implement procedures and systems necessary to maintain proper records and to afford adequate accounting controls and procedures for all business cycles in accordance with Shurgard’s standards.
  • You support the testing and roll out of new applications and processes.
  • You contribute to group projects: systems, maintenance of policies and procedures.
  • You support the Accounting Director with special projects and workflow process improvements.
  • You ensure the application of and compliance with Shurgard’s control framework.

About your people responsibilities:

  • You manage a team of 6 people delivering timely and accurate accounting and financial reporting services.
  • You collaborate with the other finance department managers (FP&A, Consolidation, Treasury, Tax) to support overall department goals and objectives.
  • You coordinate the flow of information from non-finance departments.
  • You advise staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions.
  • You provide training to new and existing staff as needed.
  • You handle personnel issues relating to staff conflicts, absenteeism, performance issues, etc.
  • You work with each direct report to establish and monitor the enhancement of goals and objectives.

LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR PROFILE!

  • You have a bachelor/master’s degree in accounting, finance or economics, or similar through experience
  • You have at least 7 years of experience in accounting.
  • You have 3+ years of experience in financial management and leadership roles.
  • You have exposure to a multi country or shared services environment, which is a strong plus. You bring experience from the Services or Retail sector.
  • You have experience with IFRS and local GAAP. Exposure to US reporting tools is a plus
  • You have exposure to Sarbanes-Oxley Act.
  • You have a working knowledge of Microsoft applications and an advanced level in Excel.
  • You have experience in CRM/ERP migration projects (with focus on UAT, acting as key user/trainer).
  • You are proficient in SAP, and familiarity with SAP S/4HANA is considered an additional advantage.
  • You are fluent in English and French, both written and verbally. Any other European language skills are considered as a plus.
  • You travel occasionally to meet with internal clients, attend training courses and meetings. Travel is expected to be around 20% of the time, often including overnight stays.
